Keeping on the path to Self-Improvement

by coachmiami

Did you see the movie a few years ago with one of our favorite actors (Bill Murray) in the main role as a psychiatric patient with a goldfish who chases after his psychiatrist who is doing his best to get away from him. The movie is called “What About Bob?”.

One of the lines in the movie is repeated over and over as Bob learns to do things on his own that have been frightening for him in the past. As Bob does these different challenging things (like getting on a Greyhound bus), he says to himself “baby steps, baby steps”.

We encourage you to do the same thing! Whatever it is you are attempting to do today or any day, start with baby steps. We know because you are reading this that you are one of the few who have the motivation to do and be more than most.

You might be struggling to understand how this will happen or why it is not happening as quickly as it should.

We understand!

We Are Just Like You!

As we look back at what we have done here at SIL - by taking little baby steps, one after another, day after day, there is a clear cumulative effect.

We have a website! With participating members!

But still, every time we crest a hill on this road we are on, there lies in front of us – more road! And we thought we were almost there!

More baby steps!

It is also important to stop and reflect on where you have been. Look at the overall journey.

  • Has it been worthwhile?
  • Is your memory one of satisfaction that you have given fair value for your return?
  • Have you been able to stop and enjoy life along the way or was your head down at your feet and you missed everything but your feet and the potholes?

Don’t worry! Be happy! Today is a new day! Yesterday doesn’t mean a hill of beans now!

Here are some steps we at self-improvement-lounge.com have found useful.

  1. Take some time to review the last year or so.
  • Did we have a plan?
  • Did we work our plan?
  • Did it us where we wanted to go?
  1. We are firm about defining in our mind and on paper where we want to go. We then break this into smaller achievable parts! Set a date we will get there.
  2. We begin every day by taking baby steps down the road to where we want to go. We’ll get there – sooner or later! We just need to remember to look around and enjoy the trip along the way!
